Virtual Reality (VR)
Virtual Reality is a new concept in the digital
world, where an artificial environment is created by using software. It is
presented in such a way that the user suspends belief and accepts it as the
real environment.
With reference to the above context, the word
'virtual' is referred to as near and 'reality' is what we experience as human
beings. Thus, the term 'virtual reality' basically means 'near-reality'.
Everything that we know about the reality, comes through our senses. Our entire
experience of reality is simply a combination of sensory information and our
brains sense-making mechanisms for that event. So, we can say that the virtual
reality entails presenting our senses with a computer generated virtual
environment that we can explore in various ways.
Thus, virtual reality refers to as a
three-dimensional, computer generated environment which can be explored and
interacted with by a user. The objects appear to be real and making the user
feel such that they are immersed in the surroundings.
This reality is primarily experienced through our
senses viz. sight and sound. The simplest form of virtual reality is a 3D
(Three Dimensional) image that can be explored interactively on a personal
computer. It can be done by manipulating the computer keys or the mouse so that
the content of the image moves in some direction or zooms in or out. There are
many applications for virtual reality. Some of them are mentioned as under:
(a) Architecture
(b) Arts
(c) Medicine
(d) Entertainment
(e) Sports
So, we can conclude that virtual reality is the
creation of a virtual environment presented to our senses in such a way that we
experience our presence in the same environment. It has both entertainment and
serious uses. We can expect many more innovative uses of the technology in the
near future.
